Real parents tell you why this method works. Listen to their insights. |
| My wife and I have begun applying some of the basic principles
outlined in John Whitcomb's book Capitate Your Kids with our 12 year old
daughter. She now has a negotiated "salary" out of which she purchases
all clothing, entertainment, school supplies and gifts. Specific
parameters and expectations are contained in an annually updated
contract. She currently has under her control a TYME card and a separate
savings account. It is a joy to see her embrace and learn money
management through goal setting and budgeting. She truly appreciates the
trust we have shown in her and the independence/responsibility that
accompanies it. Best of all, we have had no fights over money in almost
a year! Jeff Stephenson, Director Care Management |
| I have been using the "Capitate Your Kids" system for over two years for
my 13 and 16 year old. We all love it. Not only have I saved money, but
I have also eliminated the begging and whining for "things". Now when
they want something that I think is a luxury, I just tell them to save
for it. It's amazing how frugal they have become now that they control
their own purse strings. Both children quickly learned the "value" of
everything they consume. This system is better than any economics class
for rapid learning and comprehension. I have no doubts about their
ability to manage money when they leave home. Kathy Ledvina, VP for Managed Care Contracting |
| Ed Asner is noted to have observed that raising kids is part joy
and part guerilla warfare; here is a tactical field guide toward
surviving in that arena. The Whitcombs have combined humor, sound
effects and common sense into a short guide that goes long on how to
teach your kids the true value of money. It is not a golden apple always
out of reach but rather a tool to be used in achieving independence with
confidence. It's my observation that this could only have been written
by a couple that has compared other cultures to our American consumerism
and learned lessons valuable enough to pass on to the next
generation. John Burkhalter, International Trade Account

| I read Capitate Your Kids with great interest. The ideas are compelling,
logical and thoughtfully laid out with realistic examples that were
engaging and entertaining. The message of giving responsibility in order
to teach responsibilty comes through clearly and makes me almost want to
raise my children again just so I could "capitate" them. A helpful book
that I will repeatedly recommend to my friends and colleagues. Jane Glodoski, Parent and Educator |
| Dr. Whitcomb's book offers a workable guide to enhance the growth
of teenagers toward adult financial responsibility. With foresight and
some financial planning of my own, I walk more confidently into this
exciting adventure with my own children. Mary Ihde, RN |
| I loved the practical ideas and step by step guidance in "Capitate
Your Kids" As a single mother of three, I have used Dr. Whitcomb's ideas for
teaching kids money management skills since they were young. This method
has made my kids knowledgeable about money management, interested in
planning budgets, and partners in finance. All the whining and conflict
at the mall dissolved into conversations of guidance and empowerment.
With their own clothing budget they could choose the $ 75 jeans and have
no new socks, or they could shop for jeans on sale and get underwear
too. They have learned real life skills while iin the safety of
practicing at home. My eldest is now a young adult at college, living on
her own, working, paying her bills, planning for the long range, and
navigating the world of credit cards, debt, and down payments. She is
self confident with her money management abilities and loves being
independent. Patricia Green, RN |
| Capitate Your Kids lays the foundation for kids' money habits. Each step
seems so easy, so obvious, yet no other author has put a package
together in which all the elements are so clearly defined. This book is
the prequel to The Millionaire Next Door. Rick Vollbrecht, former Vice President, Fiserv Corp |
| The book is certainly fun and relevant to my concerns as a parent.
Your insights on behavior and financial issues pertaining to children
are keen. More importantly your suggested approaches to these issues
offer genuine possible alternative approaches and solutions for parents.
These approaches include both your general philosophy as well as
specific actions such as your capitated contracts, which are most
intriguing. Perhaps the one piece of concrete contribution I can make besides my general expression of enthusiasm as a parent is to acknowledge that indeed your use of these notions of capitation and budgeting are accurate and used in the appropriate manner. Obviously these concepts are at the heart of the financial dynamics in the health care system, and the manner in which you have adapted these to personal finance is imaginative and very appropriate. The critical issues of fiscal constraint, planning, expression of values and mission, and decentralized decision making, all within these capitated constraints, are all critical and relevant issues within the health care system. You adapt these issues in a compelling manner to the tough topic for parents of teaching their children to manage their finances in a meaningful, smart, and responsible manner. Indeed, your notion of capitating your children is a microcosm of the broader use of these concepts in the health care system. Mark Covaleski, PhD |
| This is a book that will bring a smile to the hearts and wallets
of parents! Dr. Whitcomb lends humor and a great deal of insight to the
serious subject of teaching kids about money. Every parent will
recognize his or her own kids in this book! Dr. Whitcomb has a clever
way of teaching kids about money. In this book he shows how to do it!
It's worked successfully in his home and its easy enough for any parent
to use. Everyone wins money in this book - kids and parents alike, and
they have fun doing it. This book gives rich advice. Parents will
chuckle as they see themselves and their kids on these pages! But the
real profit lies in the wealth of ideas Dr. Whitcomb gives on teaching
money to kids. Sharon Koenings, Director of College Admissions and
College Counseling |
| Responsible teenagers? Sounds like an oxymoron but here is truly a
way to make that happen. I fervently wish MY parents had had this book
to teach me to be money savvy. My biggest concern is that if I do this
with my 1-year-old, he will be way beyond me in these matters. Parents
looking for a way to gently coax their offspring toward responsible
adulthood have now bot a terrific guide to help them. Maybe this should
be touted as THE new baby gift of the new century. Linda R. Schnable, MSW |
| Sink or Swim (aka Capitate Your Kids) really does help to put a
head on their shoulders. This book provided us with a clear guide to
introduce our children to the skills and responsibilities needed to live
within a budget. It offered helpful lessons to teach them how to get
their money's worth and live within their means. The entertaining,
personal saga of how the author developed this method included the
bloopers he encountered when using the system with his own kids. It
helped us avoid his mistakes, and left us the opportunity to make some
new ones of our own. Flip and Aaria Troiano |
| John, I found it interesting that as I am just finishing reading
your book I also found a feature article in the Sunday paper stating how
much influence our children have on our spending habits. The article
further stated that many children have no concept of cost and are only
interested in making sure they have the latest and greatest name brand
clothing. I have a 14 year old and 11 year old. Both have begun to ask for clothing and other accessories on a regular basis. Every time I think we are done shopping for them they need a new shirt or a pair of pants with a signature logo. They have no concept of the cost. I believe your book provides an effective solution to teaching kids not only the value of money but other values they will use throughout their lifetime. As a parent and a CPA I am excited about this thought. I will be implementing your strategies soon. Carl Schultz, CPA |
